As AHF members are aware, the shortage of RDNs poses a significant challenge to our industry. In a recent AHF webinar, Addressing the RDN Shortage: Strategies for Sustainable Solutions, speaker Lori Chang, MS, RD, CSCS, CSSD, Associate Director of Clinical Nutrition at MD Anderson Caner Center, provided a detailed analysis of the factors contributing to the shortage as well as practical approaches you can take at your facility to alleviate the impact.

Lori highlighted the various components causing the shortage of RDNs, from graduation rates, exam pass rates, the new master’s degree requirement, to compensation considerations. She then outlined the steps MD Anderson has taken to get in front of the shortage. Through a variety of actions, they’ve worked to improve their dietitian retention rates with career pathways, workplace incentives, and adjustment to workload distribution. By taking these actions, open positions have become more attractive to potential hires, thus also improving their recruitment efforts.

Understanding the trends and strategies to address this issue is essential for anyone involved in Food and Nutrition Services.
